The Fiestas del Carmen are Arguineguín's big summer festival, held in July with a sea procession of decorated fishing boats. The council gives only "mid-July", so check the programme the council publishes each summer.

The Fiestas del Carmen honour the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of sailors, and they are the festival that best shows what Arguineguín still is underneath the resorts: a fishing town. The council's tourism office dates them to mid-July and singles out the sea procession, in which fishing boats are dressed up for the occasion and fish is grilled. The same festival is held in Puerto de Mogán, so the celebrations stretch over several weeks. The exact day of the sea procession is not fixed by the council in advance, so the final programme is the thing to check each year.

When the Fiesta del Carmen is held

Mogán council's page on local festivals says the Fiestas del Carmen take place in the seafaring districts of Arguineguín and Playa de Mogán in mid-July. It gives no day-by-day dates. A festival listing (Festivales de España, which is not an official source) gives the 2026 window as 10 July to 2 August and the 2025 dates below. The 2026 edition has now passed. No 2027 programme has been published, and the council typically puts the final programme out in early summer.

The 2025 pattern, from that listing, is a useful guide to how the weeks fall:

Event2025 dateNotes
Romería-ofrenda (pilgrimage with decorated carts)Saturday 12 JulyThe Saturday before 16 July; starts at 18:00 from Calle Manuel Álamo Suárez and ends at Plaza Pérez Galdós; 22 carts
Day of the Virgen del Carmen16 JulyMass at 19:00, then a land procession through the streets to Las Marañuelas beach
Arguineguín sea processionSunday 20 JulyThe Arguineguín boats meet the sister statue from Playa de Mogán at sea
Puerto de Mogán sea processionSunday 3 AugustCloses the cycle

The listing is secondary, so treat the exact days as the shape of the festival rather than as a promise for next year. Do not plan a flight around a date you have not seen on a council or parish programme.

The sea procession itself

The council calls the maritime procession one of the great events of the local calendar: the fishing boats are dressed overall, and there is grilled fish. According to the listing, the fleets of Arguineguín and Playa de Mogán meet in Atlantic waters so that the two towns' statues of the Virgin can be brought together. For the participants it is a religious act; for visitors it is mostly a spectacle of boats seen from the harbour wall or the shore.

The council does not publish where the boats gather or which stretch of coast gives the best view. Arguineguín's working harbour is the natural place to start, and the fishing harbour and the fishermen's cooperative page explains how it works. For the town's wider story, see the history of Arguineguín.

What else is in the programme

The festival is not one day. According to the listing, the weeks of the Carmen include novenas and masses, exhibitions, open-air cinema, dance nights with orchestras, Canarian folk music (parrandas), traditional games, regattas and sports competitions, and concerts. Admission is free, according to that source. The council's own festival page mentions one more local custom: the bajada de la rama in Arguineguín, a street procession of about three hours, with music and water thrown from balconies to cool the walkers. Its date is not given there, so do not assume it falls on a Carmen weekend.

Getting there and getting around on festival days

The events named in the listing are the parish church, the seafront at Las Marañuelas, the harbour and Plaza Pérez Galdós, all in the town itself, so staying in Arguineguín means you can walk. If you are staying elsewhere, the buses are covered in buses in and from Arguineguín, and the boats in boats from Arguineguín. Evening events end late, so check the last bus before you commit to an evening out, and for parking see parking in Arguineguín. Expect more people than usual.

Practical tips

Carmen programme hunting. The parish and Mogán council publish the programme; the Agrupación Folclórica Los Pescadores is named by the listing as a main organiser. Look for it in June or early July, and treat any date from an earlier year as a pattern only.

Other festivals and markets around it

For the rest of the calendar, festivals and events through the year is the page to open, and the neighbours in the festival cycle are Carnival in Arguineguín and the south and Christmas and New Year. On the practical side, the weekly Tuesday market in Arguineguín and the markets in Puerto de Mogán are good company for a festival week, and the evening scene is on evenings and nightlife.
