Parking in Arguineguín: what is published, market-day tactics and fines

No official map of paid and free parking in Arguineguín is published, so read the street signs. Tuesday market day is the one day to avoid driving into the centre.

There is no published map or tariff for paid and free parking in Arguineguín. Mogán council's blue-zone (zona azul) service is documented only for Playa de Mogán, so where meters stand in Arguineguín, what they cost and when they run is not published. What follows is what is verified, what to do about it, and how to avoid the one day of the week when parking is hardest.

That day is Tuesday. The weekly market runs from 08:30 to 15:00 and fills the middle of town, so the sensible plan is to leave the car at the hotel and take a bus, a taxi or a walk. The rest of this page covers the rules that apply to any driver in Spain, the free motorhome area, what a hire car needs to be safe, and what happens if you get a ticket.

What is, and is not, published

Mogán council runs a municipal parking and beach-services company, and a blue-zone service came into force on 10 January 2022 with 543 metered spaces in Playa de Mogán (Explanada del Castillete, Rivera del Carmen) and about 130 white resident-only spaces. A Canarias7 report on that launch does not name Arguineguín. News items mention an underground car park for the town, but the opening hours and tariff are not published, so treat a car park you see in front of you as the arbiter, and read the sign at the entrance.

In practice that means three things:

Market day: Tuesday in Arguineguín

The Tuesday market is the biggest event of the week, and Líneas Blue Bird notes that it is a few metres from the port and that extra sailings run on market days. The council's tourism page gives the hours as 08:30 to 15:00, with the municipal market at Plaza Negra, the craft market at Plaza de las Marañuelas and the flea market at Plaza Negra until 14:30.

No official parking arrangement for market days is published, so these are suggestions rather than rules:

  1. Do not drive in at all. Staying within walking distance, or coming by Global bus (lines 91 and 90 serve the town) is the least stressful option.
  2. Come by sea. From Anfi del Mar, Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogán the regular boats land at the harbour a few minutes from the stalls. The boat guide has the routes.
  3. If you must drive, arrive early. The market opens at 08:30, so get there before it does and expect the streets nearest the stalls to be closed or full.
  4. Walk in from Patalavaca. The coastal walk from Patalavaca takes you to the harbour without a car.

Rules that apply wherever you park

These are general Spanish rules, not Arguineguín rules, so read the posted signs where you are:

Motorhomes

Mogán's tourism site lists a free motorhome parking area in Arguineguín on the access road to the Sunwing Hotel, with "limited time on weekends". The coordinates given are 27°45'53.07" N, 15°41'08.65" W. A municipal motorhome area the council opened in Puerto Rico was ordered closed by a court in 2021, so do not count on it. Check the signs for any current limits before you settle in, as the time limit is not specified.

Hire cars, theft and what to leave behind

The UK's Foreign Office warns of thieves who work in teams and of "highway pirates" who target foreign-registered and hire cars. In a coastal resort the advice is the plain kind: do not leave anything visible in the car, and take your passports and phones with you. For the wider picture see Is Arguineguín safe?

A UK photocard driving licence is valid in Spain; a provisional licence is not. Children under 1.35 m need an approved child seat. If you are hiring a car, check what the rental insurance covers.

Fines and how to deal with them

The amounts of parking fines in Arguineguín are not published. GOV.UK says that on-the-spot traffic fines can be cut by 50 per cent if paid within 20 days. If a ticket is left on your windscreen, read it, and pay by the method it describes within the stated period. For a hire car, check your rental terms for how fines are passed on.

Other ways to avoid parking altogether

Parking is the least of your problems if you do not drive. Bus lines 91 and 90 stop in the town, a taxi from the cooperative can be booked on +34 928 15 27 42 (see taxis in Arguineguín), and the airport is covered under flights to Gran Canaria. For the whole picture, including the island-wide card and buses, start with the transport overview, and the airport transfer guide if you are weighing a hire car.

Frequently asked questions

Is there free parking in Arguineguín?

There is no official list of free and paid areas. Mogán council documents a blue zone in Playa de Mogán, and a free motorhome area in Arguineguín on the access road to the Sunwing Hotel. For cars, read the signs where you park.

Where can I park on Tuesday market day?

No official market-day parking plan is published. The market runs from 08:30 to 15:00, so arrive early, walk in, or come by bus or boat.

How much is a parking fine in Spain?

Amounts vary by municipality and offence, and no figure is published for Arguineguín. GOV.UK says on-the-spot traffic fines can be reduced by half if paid within 20 days.

Can I park a motorhome in Arguineguín?

Mogán's tourism site lists a free area on the access road to the Sunwing Hotel with limited time at weekends. The municipal motorhome area once opened in Puerto Rico was closed by court order in 2021.

Is it safe to leave a hire car parked?

Petty theft is the main risk, and the Foreign Office warns that hire cars can be targeted. Leave nothing visible and keep your documents with you.

Do I need to hire a car for Arguineguín?

Not for the town itself. Buses, boats and taxis cover the coast. A car helps for the mountains, where Roque Nublo now needs a booking and has no roadside parking.
