Christmas in Arguineguín means daytime highs around 20–22 °C, a calm seaside town and a Spanish calendar of Nochebuena, Nochevieja and the Three Kings on 5–6 January. The council's programme for 2026–27 was not out in October, so check it in December.
Christmas in Arguineguín is mild, sunny-ish and low-key. Expect daytime highs of about 20–22 °C, sea temperatures around 20 °C and a town that celebrates in Spanish style: the big family meal is on the evening of 24 December (Nochebuena), 25 December and 1 January are public holidays, and the children's celebration is the Three Kings (Reyes Magos) on the night of 5 January and the morning of 6 January. What is not settled yet is the local programme: as of October 2026, Mogán council had not published events for this winter, so there is no confirmed programme for a Christmas market, lights or a Three Kings parade in Arguineguín. This page gives you the dates, the weather and the practical things that change over the holidays, and what to look up in December.

The Canary Islands work calendar for 2027 lists 6 January as a holiday on all islands. Public holidays at the end of December are the same as elsewhere in Spain.
What to expect on the day
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Spanish families eat the main meal on the evening of the 24th. Restaurants that cater for visitors usually run special menus on the 24th and 25th, but opening hours and prices are set by each restaurant and what the Arguineguín places will offer this year is not published. Book ahead and call to confirm hours, especially for the evening of the 24th. Restaurant options are in the best restaurants in Arguineguín.
New Year's Eve. Nochevieja is traditionally celebrated with a family dinner, twelve grapes eaten with the twelve bell strokes at midnight, and then a party. Hotels in the resort areas often hold gala dinners; if you want one, ask your hotel. For a quieter night, the seafront promenade is a pleasant walk before dinner.
Three Kings. In Spanish towns the Cabalgata de Reyes takes place in the evening of 5 January, with the three kings throwing sweets to children; gifts are opened on the morning of the 6th, and the traditional cake is the roscón de Reyes. Whether Arguineguín holds a parade this year is something Mogán council announces closer to the date. If it does, it is a family event for local children, with sweets and a small crowd rather than a spectacle. Larger towns such as Maspalomas and Las Palmas usually hold bigger ones, but 2027 details have not been published.
What the weather is like
There are no official climate tables for Arguineguín. The nearest published normals are from Gran Canaria Airport on the east coast (1981–2010), and the south-west is usually sunnier and calmer. At that station December averages a daytime high of 22.2 °C and a night-time low of 16.2 °C, with about 31 mm of rain on 4.5 days and about 179 hours of sun for the month. January is 20.8 °C and 15.0 °C, 25 mm on 3.1 days, 184 hours of sun. Sea temperatures for the island's coastline average roughly 20.7–20.9 °C in December and 19.7–19.9 °C in January (a secondary source based on satellite data), so swimming is possible if you are used to cool water and short dips.
Calima, the dust haze from the Sahara, is most frequent between December and March, according to the Spanish weather agency, AEMET. It is not a storm; it makes the sky yellowish and the air warm and dry. See calima: when the Sahara dust arrives for what to do about it. A full month-by-month picture is in the weather guide and in Arguineguín in winter.
Buses, taxis and the market over the holidays
Buses. Global's line pages have separate timetables for weekdays in school term, Saturdays, holidays and non-school periods. The Christmas school holiday counts as a non-school period, and 25 December, 1 January and 6 January are holidays, so look up the exact date on Global's page for line 91 or 90 before you plan a trip. The full picture of lines and fares is on buses in and from Arguineguín.
Taxis. AENA, which runs the airport, lists a higher tariff for taxis at the airport rank on 24 and 31 December and 5 January from 22:00 to midnight the next day: a flag-fall of €6.54 and €1.55 per km, against €3.85 and €1.35 per km on an ordinary daytime. That is the airport rank's tariff and says nothing about a ride between two places in Mogán, but expect holiday-rate taxis on those nights. For arrivals around the holidays, see the airport transfer guide.
The Tuesday market. Arguineguín's market runs on Tuesdays, 08:30–15:00. In this winter, Tuesday falls on 8 December (a holiday), 22 and 29 December and 5 January. No rule for holiday weeks is published, so do not travel for the market on 8 December without checking. See the Tuesday market.
Shops and restaurants. Expect most shops to be shut on 25 December and 1 January, and many to close early on the 24th and the 31st; check your usual shop's hours. Stock up on the 23rd and the 30th if you are self-catering; shopping in Arguineguín has the options.
Eating at Christmas the Canarian way
The islands do Christmas with their own sweets and a late Christmas Eve dinner; the sister site Canary Guide describes Canarian Christmas food, including sweet-potato pasties and almond nougat. For the year-round dishes see Canarian food to try.
Practical notes for a winter stay
- Book early. Anfi's golf course advises booking in advance in the high season of October to March, and the same logic applies to hotels, apartments and flights over Christmas week. See hotels in Arguineguín and Patalavaca.
- Bring layers. Evenings are cooler, and rain is rare, though December is the wettest month at the nearest official station. A light jacket is enough for most days.
- Go further for more. If you want a Christmas market or lights, Las Palmas is the realistic choice; see a day in Las Palmas. The next big local celebration after New Year is carnival: carnival in Arguineguín and the south. A year-round list is on festivals and events.
