Choose Arguineguín for a real town and easy buses, Puerto Rico for beach-and-resort convenience, Puerto de Mogán for a pretty, quiet harbour village. All three are within 16 km.
The short answer: Arguineguín if you want a working town with a Tuesday market, a harbour and the best bus links of the three; Puerto Rico if you want a purpose-built resort with a marina, watersports and easy family days; Puerto de Mogán if you want the prettiest harbour village on this coast and are happy with a quieter, more compact base. They are only 7 km and 16 km apart by road, so the choice is about atmosphere and daily habits rather than distance.
Below is a side-by-side comparison, a section on each place with honest pros and cons, a short note on Patalavaca and Amadores, and a "choose X if…" list at the end.

Prices are not in the table because no published source compares them like for like. The practical rule is that you pay more for the seafront and the resort setting and less for a flat up the hill. Typical costs are in prices in Arguineguín.

Arguineguín: the real town
Arguineguín is a town where people live all year, not a resort built around hotels. It has a harbour with a fishing fleet, a town beach, a weekly market, pharmacies, a health centre and a Scandinavian winter community; the layout is in the map and layout of the town, and the winter community in the Scandinavian community. Its position is also its strength: from the Casa Memo stop, four Global bus lines serve the town, and the airport bus costs €4.95 according to AENA.
Pros: a genuine town feel; good bus links; the Tuesday market; shops, pharmacies and a health centre close at hand; calm water on the town beach; and a good base for long stays.
Cons: the beaches are modest in size and darker in sand than Amadores or Puerto de Mogán; nightlife is limited; and there are fewer purpose-built family attractions than in Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico: the resort
Puerto Rico lies 7 km along the coast and is built around its marina and beach. Mogán council lists the beach at 284 m of golden sand and boulders with calm water, step-free access, lifeguard, sunbed hire and water sports. The boat trips for dolphins and whales leave from Puerto Rico's port, and the Angry Birds Activity Park for children aged 3 to 13 is in Puerto Rico, not in Maspalomas as many sites say. A fuller picture is in the Puerto Rico guide and in the sister-site page on Puerto Rico on Canary Guide.
Pros: the most facilities for families; the most to do in the evening; watersports on the doorstep; plenty of apartments and hotels, covered in hotels in Puerto Rico and Amadores.
Cons: it is a resort first, so there is less everyday local life; much of it is built on slopes, so check the walk to the beach before booking.
Puerto de Mogán: the harbour village
Puerto de Mogán is 16 km west of Arguineguín, about 21 minutes by road. Its marina is one of only two on this coast with a Blue Flag for 2026–27 (the other is Pasito Blanco); no beach in Mogán holds one. The Mogán beach is 209 m of golden sand with calm water, step-free access and a lifeguard. The village has a municipal market on Fridays and a craft market on Mondays, and the sister-site profile calls it the prettiest place in the south; see Puerto de Mogán on Canary Guide, our Puerto de Mogán guide and its markets.
Pros: the most attractive setting; a calm village with a marina; good for a couples' break; hotels listed in hotels in Puerto de Mogán.
Cons: the furthest of the three from the airport and from Maspalomas; a smaller range of everyday shops and services than Arguineguín; and quiet evenings. The airport bus costs €6.80 and takes about 60 minutes.
Patalavaca and Amadores in a few lines
Two neighbours deserve a mention. Patalavaca, 30 minutes' walk from Arguineguín, is a quieter strip of apartments and restaurants around a 303 m dark-sand beach; see the Patalavaca guide. Amadores, between Puerto Rico and Tauro, has a 488 m beach of white sand, with calm water, lifeguard and sunbed hire according to the council, but no accessibility rating listed; it is covered in the Amadores guide. Anfi del Mar, with its 180 m beach and timeshare resort, lies between Patalavaca and Puerto Rico.
Getting around from each base
All three are on the coast road and the Global bus lines, and boats link them as well. Salmón's adult single fares from Arguineguín are €5 to Anfi, €8 to Puerto Rico and €15 to Puerto de Mogán. Arguineguín is served by four Global lines plus one early-morning service, so check which lines pass your door before booking if you will not hire a car. Details are in buses in and from Arguineguín and boats from Arguineguín.
The one-day test for picking a base. Imagine a typical day: a swim, a market, lunch, a trip. If that day involves a bus, Arguineguín removes the most friction. If it involves a pool and a boat trip, Puerto Rico does. If it involves a coffee, a stroll and little else, Puerto de Mogán suits.
Which base suits which kind of trip
- Couples: Puerto de Mogán for scenery, Arguineguín for a more relaxed, local pace.
- Families: Puerto Rico for facilities; Arguineguín if you want a quieter town with calm water at the Perchel pool and playground.
- Over-60s and winter stays: Arguineguín, for shops, health centre, buses and a settled community; see the guide for overwinterers.
- Long stays and remote work: Arguineguín for services, Puerto Rico for choice of flats.
