Hotels in Puerto Rico and Amadores: which to choose, and how far from the sand

Puerto Rico and Amadores have a handful of established resort hotels, mostly three- and four-star, strung along the cliffs above the two beaches. The ones below are confirmed from the operators' own pages.

Most hotels in Puerto Rico and Amadores are mid-sized, three- or four-star resort properties on the cliff roads above the two beaches, and the main choice is between a spa hotel (Gloria Palace Amadores), a big all-inclusive family resort (Servatur Puerto Azul and Altamadores) and cheaper, simpler stays (Servatur Altamar and Riosol, or the Puerto Bello apartments). All six are confirmed by the operators' own websites; star ratings below are the ones the operators state.

Puerto Rico is a resort about 7 km by road from Arguineguín, built on a hillside around its marina and a sheltered beach. Amadores is the next bay along, with its own beach. If you are still deciding which of the three bases suits you, Arguineguín, Puerto Rico or Puerto de Mogán compares them; this page only lists where to sleep once you have chosen the Puerto Rico end of the coast.

Gloria Palace Amadores: the spa hotel

The Gloria Palace Amadores Thalasso & Hotel is a four-star cliff-top hotel whose main draw is its seawater spa. Gloria's own site describes rooms with sea views, thalasso-included room types, a family suite for up to six guests and a premium double with a private pool that is adults only. The hotel says it stands 300 metres from the beach, and that includes a climb back up, so factor in the slope if anyone in your party finds hills hard.

All-inclusive is offered, and Gloria also sells day passes to non-guests. If wellness is the point of the trip, this is the obvious pick in this part of the coast; if the point is to be on the sand in five minutes, look at the other hotels in the table first. You can read about the sand itself on the Amadores beach page.

Servatur Puerto Azul: the biggest resort

Servatur calls Puerto Azul its largest hotel. After a renovation it is a four-star all-inclusive resort with five pools, a splash area with slides for children, a separate adults-only zone, a gym and an outdoor spa that guests can use free of charge. There is an evening entertainment programme with live music, which suits families and not everyone else. It sits on a cliff between the Amadores and Puerto Rico beaches, with views over the Puerto Rico valley and the Atlantic.

Because it is big and entertainment-led, it is a poor choice if you want a hushed, grown-up week; the adults-only zone helps but does not change the character of the place. For a calmer feel, the smaller Servatur hotels below are closer to what most people picture.

Altamadores, Altamar and Riosol: three smaller Servatur options

Servatur Altamadores is a four-star complex in the Puerto Rico tourist area with all-inclusive and other boards. It has two pools (one for children), a splash zone, a gym and a buffet restaurant with a barbecue terrace. Servatur places it a few minutes from the Amadores and Puerto Rico beaches.

Servatur Altamar is the three-star option above Amadores bay, with studios and apartments, a pool that is heated in winter, a games area and a buffet restaurant whose terrace looks over the bay. It is the one to look at if you want sea views on a lower budget.

Servatur Riosol is a three-star hotel built into the cliff between the Puerto Rico and Amadores beaches. It has a snack bar and a restaurant for breakfast and dinner, pools with a children's area, and a paid adults-only (18+) pool area with a reserved sunbed and one drink included. The shopping and leisure area of Puerto Rico is a few minutes away on foot, according to Servatur.

Apartments instead of a hotel: LIVVO Puerto Bello

LIVVO Puerto Bello has 72 apartments in Puerto Rico, each with a bedroom with two single beds, a living room with a sofa bed, and a full kitchen. There is an outdoor pool and terraces, and LIVVO puts the beach about 10 minutes away on foot. Puerto Rico is built on a hillside, so allow more time for the walk back up. Whether apartments or hotels suit you better is the question for apartments, aparthotels or hotels.

Getting around from these hotels

Global's lines 91, 33 and 39 serve Puerto Rico, and line 39 also serves Amadores, so you can reach Arguineguín without a car; see buses in and from Arguineguín for the lines and fares. The airport is about 42 km from Arguineguín by road, and the bus fare to Arguineguín is €4.95 according to AENA. The airport transfer guide covers taxi and hire car as well.

By boat, Líneas Salmón lists adult fares between Arguineguín and Puerto Rico of €8 single and €14 return (check the current timetable); the guide to boats from Arguineguín has the routes. Puerto Rico also holds a market every second Sunday. On the hill roads, a hire car or taxi saves a lot of climbing.

What this page does not list

The big Radisson Blu Resort at La Verga sits in Patalavaca, nearer to Arguineguín, and the Sunwing Arguineguín is on Arguineguín's seafront; both belong in the best hotels in Arguineguín and Patalavaca. Further west, hotels in Puerto de Mogán are in a different sort of place altogether: a harbour village rather than a hillside resort. For an adults-only break, see adults-only hotels near Arguineguín.

For more on the resort itself, there is a neighbour's guide to Puerto Rico, and the sister site Canary Guide has a Puerto Rico resort page.

Frequently asked questions

Which hotel is closest to the beach in Puerto Rico and Amadores?

None of the operators here says "beachfront". Gloria Palace Amadores states 300 metres to the beach, Servatur Altamadores and Altamar say "a few minutes" away, and LIVVO Puerto Bello says about 10 minutes on foot. All of them involve a slope, so check the hotel's map.

Are there all-inclusive hotels in Puerto Rico?

Yes. Servatur Puerto Azul and Altamadores both offer all-inclusive, and Gloria Palace Amadores also lists an all-inclusive service. Servatur Puerto Azul also sells an upgraded "Todo Incluido +" board with premium drinks.

Is there an adults-only option?

Whole adults-only hotels are not covered here. Puerto Azul has an adults-only zone, Riosol has a paid adults-only (18+) pool area, and Gloria Palace Amadores has adults-only premium rooms with a private pool.

Is Amadores or Puerto Rico better for a hotel?

The hotels sit on the same cliffs between the two bays, so the real difference is the walk and the hill. Puerto Rico has the marina, restaurants and shops; Amadores has the quieter bay. Most of the hotels listed here are roughly between the two.

Can I get from Puerto Rico to Arguineguín without a car?

Yes, by Global bus (lines 91, 33 and 39 serve Puerto Rico) or by boat. Roads between the two are about 7 km.
