A package gives you legal protection if the firm collapses and one phone number if things go wrong; booking yourself gives you choice of flights, room and dates. For UK travellers, the deciding factor is often ATOL.
For a one- or two-week trip to Arguineguín, a package holiday buys you protection and simplicity; booking flights and a room separately buys you choice and flexibility. Neither is cheaper every time. If you book a flight and a hotel together from a UK seller, the package is protected by the ATOL scheme if the firm stops trading. If you book the pieces separately, you manage the risk yourself.
This page is for people choosing between the two. Where to sleep once you have decided is covered in apartments, aparthotels or hotels and in where to stay in Arguineguín.
What counts as a package, legally
In the UK, the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018 define a package as a combination of at least two types of travel service, for example flights and accommodation, for the same trip. It counts as a package if, among other things, you buy the parts at a single point of sale and select them before agreeing to pay, if the total price is a single price, if it is sold under the word "package" or similar, or if you are passed to a second trader through linked online booking within 24 hours using the same name and payment details.
That last rule catches many "build your own" bookings. If you click through from the flight booking to a hotel offer on the same site and pay, you may have bought a package without noticing. The seller must tell you before you pay.
What ATOL protects, and what it does not
ATOL (Air Travel Organisers' Licensing) is a UK financial protection scheme that protects your money if the travel firm you booked with stops trading, before or during a trip. The Civil Aviation Authority runs it, and firms that hold a licence pay a fee into a trust fund (£2.50 per traveller, according to the ATOL site).
What it covers:
- A refund if the firm fails before you travel.
- A flight home, and hotel costs, if the firm fails while you are away.
What it does not cover, according to ATOL's own site:
- Accommodation-only bookings, because they include no flight.
- Complaints about your hotel, food, cleanliness, missed transfers or lost luggage. Those go to the travel provider or your travel insurer.
- Delays or flight cancellations as such. The scheme is not a substitute for travel insurance.
When you pay for an ATOL-protected trip, even a deposit, the seller must give you an ATOL Certificate with the business's name and ATOL number and what is protected. Check that it matches your booking, and keep a copy. The CAA runs a search tool so you can check whether a firm holds an ATOL. The ATOL site also warns that the protection does not apply if the tour operator is not UK-based or if flights and hotel were booked separately.
ATOL certificate, not logo: a logo on a website is not proof. If the firm cannot send an ATOL Certificate after you pay, treat that as a warning and check the firm on the CAA's search tool before sending more money.
If you book the pieces yourself
Booking a flight from an airline and a room from a hotel or apartment owner is not a package, and you should not expect ATOL cover. Your protection comes from three places:
- Your card. For credit card purchases of between £100 and £30,000, section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 makes the card company jointly liable with the seller for breach of contract or misrepresentation. Check the exact conditions with your card provider; a debit card has a different, narrower route (chargeback).
- Travel insurance, in particular cover for the failure of a carrier or supplier. The ATOL site tells holidaymakers whose trip is not ATOL-protected to check that their insurance covers them if an operator stops trading. Our page on travel insurance, GHIC and EHIC covers the health side.
- The seller's cancellation terms. Read them before you pay, especially for apartments rented from a private owner.
What each approach is good at
| Package holiday | Booking it yourself | |
|---|---|---|
| If the firm fails | ATOL certificate for flight-inclusive UK packages | Card protection and insurance, not ATOL |
| If something goes wrong in Arguineguín | One company to contact; the organiser is responsible for the package | You deal separately with each supplier |
| Choice of room, area and flight times | Limited to what the operator sells | Anything that is on sale |
| Airport transfer | Often included or bookable in one go | You arrange it; see airport transfer to Arguineguín |
| Length of stay | Usually fixed in blocks (7 or 14 nights) | Any number of nights, including long winter stays |
| Price | Can be lower when the operator owns or contracts the hotel | Can be lower when you pick budget flights and a self-catering flat |
The package hotels in Arguineguín
Some hotels here are run by tour operators. The Sunwing Arguineguín, for instance, is operated by Nordic Leisure Travel Group, the company behind Ving, Spies and Tjäreborg; the owning company was sold to Premia Properties in 2025, with the operator staying on as tenant under a long lease. That shows how packages tie into the room supply: a hotel run by an operator is naturally sold through that operator's brands, and independent bookers may find it priced differently on aggregator sites. Compare the same dates both ways.
Apartment-led places, such as Patalavaca's Servatur Green Beach, are generally easier to book directly. The best hotels for each kind of visitor are in the best hotels in Arguineguín and Patalavaca.
Where the costs hide
- Flights. In a package they are part of the price; on your own, add the cost of bags and seats. Check flights to Gran Canaria for options.
- Transfers. Airport to Arguineguín by bus costs €4.95 according to AENA, against a metered taxi fare, and the bus does not wait for a late plane. See buses in and from Arguineguín.
- Meals. A package with half-board or all-inclusive fixes the cost; self-booked apartments let you shop at the Tuesday market and eat out when you like. For local costs, see prices in Arguineguín.
- Peak dates. School holidays and the northern winter push up both kinds of price. See the money-saving ideas in budget accommodation in and around Arguineguín.
Who should pick which
Choose a package if it is your first trip, you are travelling with young children, you want one contract and one ATOL certificate, or you like the idea of a representative. Book it yourself if you want an apartment, a longer or odd-length stay, a particular airport or airline, or a base outside the big hotels. A hybrid works too: buy flights from a reputable airline by credit card and book a refundable room, which keeps your protection decent and your options open. If you want adults-only comfort, the choices are narrower; see adults-only hotels near Arguineguín.
Frequently asked questions
Is a package holiday to Gran Canaria cheaper than booking separately?
Sometimes. It is cheaper most often when the operator has contracted the hotel in bulk. It is rarely cheaper if you only need a self-catering apartment. Price the same dates both ways, including bags, transfers and meals.
What does ATOL protected mean?
It means that if the UK travel company you booked with goes out of business, you can get your money back if you had not travelled, or be brought home if you were already away. You should receive an ATOL Certificate once you pay anything for the trip.
Is a hotel booking ATOL protected?
No. ATOL's own site says accommodation-only bookings are not covered because they include no flight. A flight plus hotel from the same UK seller usually is.
Does ATOL cover me if I book flights and a hotel on separate websites?
Generally not, unless the way the sites link together makes it a package under the 2018 regulations. If in doubt, ask the seller to confirm in writing and look for an ATOL Certificate.
Can I claim if my package hotel in Arguineguín is not as described?
Not from ATOL. Complain in writing to the organiser, and use ABTA or Citizens Advice if the firm belongs to a trade body or does not reply, as ATOL's site suggests.
Are packages from other countries protected like UK ones?
Not by ATOL, which is a UK scheme. Other countries have their own rules, so check how your seller protects your money before you pay.
